Learning Outcomes

The primary mission of the MS-ESM degree program is:

To educate leaders to manage the sustainability and resilience of their organizations in order to protect the natural environment.

“Leaders” include those who are currently, and who want to be, involved in protecting the natural environment at all levels within their organizations. The “organizations” include those involved in environmentally focused missions, or any facet of business, government, and nonprofits who want to build sustainability into their core mission and in their day-to-day enterprise. Incorporating sustainability and resilience into core operations for the good of the environment involves a striving to maintain an awareness of the resources used in daily operations, including a decrease in waste and the carbon footprint at every opportunity.

The key objectives of this student-focused program that will drive its impact are to:

● Prepare students for successful careers in public or private organizations within the profit and nonprofit sectors to have an influence on environmental sustainability; ● Provide students an interdisciplinary understanding of the most critical methods, tools, and data of environmental science, management, and business; ● Develop within its graduates a strong sense of business, environmental intelligence, and ethics delivered through a leading-edge curriculum that provides the combination of advanced business competence and environmental science; ● Instill a vision for a sustainable future and provide graduates with the creativity, knowledge, and skills to get there; and ● Train students to advance sustainability with the understanding that to do so will require behavioral, cultural, and institutional transformations at multiple temporal and spatial scales.
