Urban Design Certificate
University of Virginia
Description
The four graduate departments – Architectural History, Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban + Environmental Planning – each offer unique contributions to the program. The certificate is structured to synthesize concepts, methods and strengths across disciplines into new approaches to the design and planning of resilient cities and settlements.
Architects pursuing the urban design certificate will learn how an urban plan can orchestrate the interactions between buildings and the spaces between and around them. For landscape architects, the certificate will provide tools and strategies to enable them to negotiate the needs of urban development with the needs of local and regional ecosystems. Certificate courses will build spatial skills and design thinking for students from Urban and Environmental Planning. Students in History can gain concepts and strategies to help ensure that historic buildings and districts maintain or renew their vitality in a changing urban context.
