Description

The Master of Science in Sustainability–thesis and nonthesis option; is ideal for students studying social and/ or environmental aspects of sustainability.Sustainability is an interdisciplinary field of study, and the existing disciplines present at USD provide robust resources for sustainability pedagogy and research.

The concept of sustainability encompasses a wide range of topics and endeavors, including economic development, population, food security, ecosystems, energy, industry, and conflict resolution. Its unifying core is a commitment to development that can be sustained over time while preserving the health of both human society and the environment.

Sustainability is often described as having three pillars: environmental sustainability, social sustainability, and economic sustainability. USD’s faculty has expertise in all three of these areas including environmental sustainability expertise through departments such as Biology and Chemistry; social sustainability expertise through departments such as Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, and Philosophy; and economic sustainability through the Beacom School of Business.
